I love fall and everything it brings with it, especially the fall flavors of pumpkin, apple, and maple. As soon as the cooler temps hit, I was all about the pumpkin spice latte. I still love those but to add a little variety, I came up with this maple latte. My husband and I love anything maple flavored so we always have a stock of real Vermont maple syrup in the house. I first tried adding maple syrup directly to the latte but it wasn't sweet or maple-y enough. The trick was adding a little sugar and maple extract.
Maple simple syrup:
1 cup water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup real maple syrup
1/4 tsp. maple extract or maple flavoring
Steamed milk (or heated milk)
Whipped cream (optional)
To prepare the simple syrup, in a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and maple syrup over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally. Stir in the maple extract.
To prepare the latte, add the desired amount of brewed espresso and steamed milk to a coffee cup. Stir in 1-2 tbsp. of maple simple syrup or more to taste. Top with whipped cream and additional maple syrup, if desired.
Store the simple syrup in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
